About
Gradina is the hill on which old Zemunik once stood. The settlement goes back to Liburnian times, and remains of Roman-era buildings have been preserved on the site. In the 14th century it held a fort of King Louis I of Anjou, who came to the aid of Zadar against Venice in 1346. From 1570 Zemunik was under Ottoman rule and became one of their strongholds. In 1647 and 1683 most of Zemunik was destroyed and burned, and after the Ottomans left it became, from 1729, the seat of the serdar, the link between the Venetian authorities and the local people. Today Gradina holds the village cemetery and the Church of St Catherine.
